Lower back/ Hip condition or just Psoas Muscles Pain?

Recently I have treated 2 patients with hip and lower back pain. Both have been told by their doctors that they might require surgery as they have degenerative changes in their hip joint and L4 and L5 vertebra.

We found in our clinic however, that their major problems are in the psoas muscles after consultation and careful assessment. Following a few sessions of Low Level Laser therapy (LLLT), they found walking had become easier.

Psoas muscle pain may feel like lower back pain at waist-level, or groin pain (psoas tendinitis or psoas bursitis), deep pelvic pain (lumbopelvic pain), pain deep in the belly. Tight psoas muscles are also a major contributor to hip joint pain.

The iliopsoas muscles consist of the iliacus muscles, which span from each groin to the sides of the pelvic cavity; the psoas muscles span from the inner groin to the spine behind the breathing diaphragm; and because they share the same tendon at the groin, they are called "the iliopsoas muscles". Tight psoas muscles put undue pressure on the bursa at the groin, causing iliopsoas bursitis and iliopsoas tendinitis. Tight psoas muscles are in a constant state of fatigue thus give rise to sore feelings, leading to pelvic and abdominal pain.

LLLT helps to relax the muscle, reduce inflammation, relieve pain and improve the circulation and therefore restore the functions. A right diagnosis can avoid any unnecessary surgery or saving time and fortunes.

Recurrent falls, fall related injuries

About 20% of my patients have chronic pain caused by recurrent falls and fracture. Here we provide some tips for preventing falls and fracture as suggested by American Council on Exercise.

  • Create an exercise regime that includes aerobic weight-bearing exercises four days per week, plus two or three days of resistance training.
  • Perform flexibility exercises frequently, but make sure you don't include activities that cause the spine to bend forward.
  • Build your muscles by walking, running or lifting weights.
  • Perform a variety of different exercises that you enjoy and that work different muscles.
  • Make sure your exercises don't cause any joint pain

Bursitis

Bursitis

A bursa is a fluid-filled sac lined with special cells which secrete a fluid rich in collagen and protein. About 160 bursae are found throughout the body, which act as cushions and lubricant to reduce friction between tissues, such as between tendons and bones in the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle. Inflammation of a bursa is referred to as bursitis.

The most common causes of bursitis are repetitive motions (for example, repeated throwing of a ball), trauma (extensive kneeling), infection, and preexisting rheumatoid conditions. Common symptom of bursitis include pain and loss of motion in inflammed area.

LLLT can effectively control inflammation, reduce swelling and pain, help to restore normal function.

Onions and Osteoporosis

Many of my patients with back pain have reported history of fracture (broken bones) due to osteoporosis (thinning of bone, loss of bone density); majority of them, aware of the problems, took actions to prevent it by regularly take calcium tablets, Vitamin D, calcitonin and bisphosphonate; careless consumption of these can lead to adverse side effects.

Acute pain, a case study

acute pain calf strainA recent patients of mine is a 24 year-old exercise enthuthiast, who cycles to work everyday (~30min one way) in addition to many other daily workouts.
He came to my clinic with a case of calf strain that has been progressively getting worse over a 6 months period. He felt his movement was severely limited and causing severe pain, to the point where he was unable to continue with his active lifestyle.

Chronic Pain - A problem worth solving

A report titled “A problem worth solving” from Deloitte Access Economics rang alarms about the rising cost of chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

 

In the year of 2012 alone, chronic conditions such arthritis and back pain cost Australians $55.1 billion. These included direct health costs, lost productivity and reduced quality of life. It is estimated that 6.1 million Australians are affected, of which 58% are of working age in peak income earning years (25-64 years); 43% growth in musculoskeletal cases are projected in the next two decades, including a surge in older Australians living with the conditions.

 

Action is needed now, and at Sydney Laser Health Solutions, we've vowed to do our best in the fight against this silent pandemic.
